Is that a ho-ho-hoverboard? Bizarre moment Santa Claus is spotted surfing along New York’s East River

  • A man dressed as Santa Claus is seen riding a hover-surfboard in New York City
  • Spotted by a commuter travelling through South Street Seaport near East River
  • One viewer remarked that it was 2C outside and raining at the time

This is the hilarious moment Santa Claus came to town – by surfing down New York City’s East River.

The festively dressed figure amazed onlookers by going out for a self-propelled spin underneath Brooklyn Bridge on Wednesday morning.

The footage was recorded by as Clare Bourke as she travelled along FDR Drive in the South Street Seaport area of the city.

In the video, the unidentified man is seen making his way up the East River between Manhattan and Brooklyn on what looks like a surfboard that is capable of powering itself.

Weather reports indicate that it was a chilly 2C and raining at the time.

Manhattan film producer Lila Kerns managed to capture photos of the daredevil as he surfed around with ease.

She also remembered she had taken pictures of the ‘East River dude’ back in May 2018 wearing a similar outfit, and was intrigued as to whether it was the same person.

‘I was in the South Street Seaport neighborhood, on the East River walkway. I go there most mornings to see the birds and watch the tides,’ she told The New York Post.

‘I was surprised to see he was back (I’ve seen him before, back in May . . . so I recognized him.)

‘I thought it was silly but cute to do it in costume. I was also envious he was in the water and I was on land.’

Posting photos of Santa with the Brooklyn Bridge looming in the background on social media, viewers wondered who the figure was and what was powering the surfboard.

One person suggested the red-suited rebel was on a battery-powered, finned hydrofoil that raises a board-user above the water’s surface for a smooth glide.

Another posted the video on Reddit, jokingly adding ‘beats the bus’.
