  • The shooting happened about 9.30 pm at the Riverchase Galleria in Hoover
  • A 12-year-old girl shopping at the mall was also shot and had to undergo surgery

Shoppers could be seen fleeing in terror as shots rang out an Alabama mall prior to Black Friday shopping, leaving one teen dead and two others injured.

Authorities say the shooting happened at about 9.30 pm on Thursday at the Riverchase Galleria in Hoover, a nearby suburb of Birmingham.

Police say a fight between two teens, including an 18-year-old, resulted in a gunfire exchange. One teen fled but was confronted by two police officers.

Hoover Police Captain Gregg Rector said at a news conference that an officer ‘did engage that individual, shot him and he is dead on the scene.’

The second teen was hospitalized in serious condition.

Rector said a 12-year-old girl also struck by gunfire was hospitalized. She suffered a single gunshot wound and has gone through surgery.

He added that she ‘does not have life-threatening injuries’.

The Riverchase Galleria said the mall is closed until further notice.

Police do not know how the confrontation began, but ‘we do not believe at this point the 18-year-old was armed,’ said Captain Rector

Horrified shoppers took to social media to describe how they heard gunshots inside the mall, which was open late on Thanksgiving.

The Hoover Police Department said the scene is now secure.
