Dismayed locals decorated the site of the drowning with flowers, stuffed toys, letters of love and support and Christmas decorations.

A note attached to the metal fence overlooking the canal asked if God could ‘please take this little one in your gentle arms and give family, friends and the community the strength to deal with this tragic loss’.

‘I wish there was more we could have done, we tried out best. RIP beautiful girl you will be missed,’ another wrote on a white board at the site.
