A P-plate driver has been shamed on social media for allegedly throwing a cigarette out the window towards bushland during a fire ban.

The woman allegedly tossed the cigarette butt on Tuesday while driving along Mona Vale Road towards Pymble on Sydney’s upper north shore, as bushfires burned just 3km away in Turramurra.

A driver following the woman claimed she saw her throw the lit cigarette out of her window.

A video posted to social media showed the silver Hyundai driving through thick smoke from the 70 blazes ravaging the state.

The driver’s alleged actions were harshly criticised on Reddit, and many encouraged the person who filmed the woman to report her.

‘If you haven’t already, report it to the Environment Protection Authority. That’s a $1,300 fine on a total fire ban day. Send them your video as well,’ one person said.

Fellow smokers also shared their tips on how to smoke in the car without tossing butts out the window.

‘As a smoker myself I actually usually keep a water bottle in my car that’s about half full with water, I use that as an ashtray. It’s a lot safer around summer, plus that and I couldn’t afford a fine,’ shared one user.

‘But in a time like this? That’s just reckless and stupid behavior from someone who doesn’t give a single f*** about this country.’

The fine for tossing a burning cigarette during a total fire ban is $1,320.

Four people were charged by NSW Police on Tuesday for breaching the fire ban, including a nine-year-old boy.

On Tuesday night, there were more than 70 blazes burning in both NSW and Queensland with up to 20,000 firefighters trying to stop them spreading.

Thousands of residents on the NSW mid-north coast were told it was too late to leave their homes.
