BMW reveals its revised 2-series coupe that will be built in Mexico

Britain has scored a significant international automotive coup as BMW’s sporty new 2-series coupe will make its public global premiere at this week’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.

And that’s long before its German and wider European premiere in September at the IAA MOBILITY 2021 show in BMW’s home city of Munich – which for the first time replaces the former Frankfurt Motor Show. However the car itself will be built at the BMW Group’s San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico.

The new rear-wheel drive 2-door coupe launched to the world in the UK is available initially with three engine variants – including a powerful range-topping 374horse-power 3.0 litre inline 6-cylinder all-wheel drive M240i xDrive version that will sprint from rest to 62mph in just 4.3 seconds, up to a top speed of 155mph with fuel economy of 34.9mpg

What a coup: This is BMW’s all-new 2-series coupe, which will be produced in Mexico

Priced from £34,980, the entry-level 220i model has a 184hp 2.0-litre twin-turbo 4 cylinder petrol engine that propels it from 0 to 62mph in 7.5 seconds up to a top speed of 147mph with 44.8mpg fuel economy.

From £36,900 there’s also a diesel 190hp 220d twin-turbo that accelerates from 0 to 62mph in 6.9 seconds up to 147mph and offers fuel-economy of 60 mpg.

The engines are linked to an 8-speed Steptronic Sport automatic with steering wheel paddles

All UK models will be offered in M Sport specification as standard.

German car giant BMW said: ‘Striking looks, exceptional handling, classical rear-wheel drive and a Goodwood Festival of Speed world premiere, will leave potential customers of the new BMW 2 Series Coupé in no doubt that this is a car set to excite and inspire.

‘The world premiere is to take place at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on 8th July.’

The Goodwood Festival of Speed, hosted by the Duke of Richmond at his ancestral estate near Chichester, in Sussex, runs from this Thursday until Sunday 11th July inclusive.

But customers will have to wait until early 2022 for UK deliveries.

In a normal year BMW sells more than 8,000 2-series in the UK annually.

BMW said; ‘This striking coupé brings exceptional sporting talent to the premium compact segment. It fuses classic, three-box coupé style with latest BMW design language.’

Accentuating its aerodynamic and coupe looks, it is longer (by 105mm), wider (by 64mm) and lower (by 28mm) than the car it replaces, and with a wheelbase that is 51mm longer.

BMW noted that the new 2-Series coupe is the only vehicle in its segment to offer a six-cylinder in-line engine. The chassis has been optimised for performance with near 50:50 weight distribution.
