The work to process the scene and transport the dead continued well into Monday afternoon, more than 16 hours after a shooter opened fire from the Mandalay Bay hotel into a crowd of thousands of people at a country music concert.

Police have warned that identifying bodies from the worst mass shooting in modern US history will be a ‘long, laborious process’.

Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo has said the hundreds of people who were wounded were taken to five southern Nevada hospitals.  

The first victims of the mass shooting began to be identified on Monday, as heartbroken survivors came forward with the stories of loved ones who died.

Among those who lost their lives at the hands of shooter Stephen Craig Paddock were Jordan McIldoon, 23, a mechanic’s apprentice, Sonny Melton, a 29-year-old nurse, and Denise Salmon Burditus, 50, who died in her husband Tony Burditus’ arms.
