Body found on beach is thought to be missing pregnant woman

A body found on a beach is believed to be a pregnant woman who went missing four days ago after becoming upset about an inconclusive ultrasound.

Sonam Shelar, 26, was last seen at 8.30am in Khandallah, Wellington, on Saturday.

Police said on Wednesday they had found a body at a beach in the Wairarapa which  they believed to be Ms Shelar, although formal identification is yet to take place. 

Detective Senior Sergeant Warwick McKee, of Wellington CIB, said: ‘Police have notified Sonam’s next of kin and the matter has been referred to the coroner.’

‘Police are committed to supporting the family of the deceased and providing answers for them.’

Ms Shelar’s husband Sagar, an Indian national from Mumbai, toldNewsHub that his wife had harboured dreams of giving birth to a boy and that their last ultrasound  was inconclusive.  

He also admitted that police were not ruling him out as a suspect.

‘I know that I’m their first suspect, but I know that I haven’t done anything wrong,’ he told NewsHub.  

He said the results of the ultra sound were not able to confirm the sex of the child which left Mrs Shelar upset because she wanted a baby boy.  

Detective Senior Sergeant McKee added that an investigation was ongoing and police were working closely with the family of the deceased to ascertain further facts.

‘Police want to hear from any persons who may have seen Sonam Shelar on Friday 16 November or Saturday 17 November 2018,’ he said. 

Mrs Shelar was last seen at 8.30am on Cashmere Avenue in Khandallah, and was wearing a brown jacket with fur on the hood, as well as white, black and orange trainers.

Detective Senior Sergeant McKee said police were also seeking CCTV from any businesses or residences on Cashmere Avenue, Onslow Road, Box Hill, Burma Road, Agra Crescent.
