Neighbours star Bonnie Anderson has spoken out after she admitted lying to police to protect her ex-boyfriend.

Ms Anderson was in a Melbourne court this week after covering up for Matt Arnautovic, who is the son of feared criminal and heroin dealer Dragan ‘Machine Gun Charlie’ Arnautovic.

The former child singing sensation pleaded guilty to failing to inform police her then-boyfriend was behind the wheel of her car when he drove off from police in 2017. 

She escaped conviction and was given a good behaviour bond.

Now the Logie-nominated star has opened up about her decision to lie police and her relationship with the younger Arnautovic.

‘I made a mistake which I put down to my naivety and being overly trusting,’ Anderson told the Sunday Herald Sun.

‘It is a huge life lesson which I will learn from.

‘I’m really glad it’s now something of the past that I can put behind me,’ she said. 

Ms Anderson claimed in court she had made a big mistake getting involved with the feared criminal’s son.

The magistrate warned her: ‘You lay with dogs you get up with fleas’.

Her lawyer Rainer Martini said his client had shown ‘misguided loyalty’ in covering up for her troubled then-boyfriend.

‘At the end of the day it was a misguided relationship,’ he told the court.

However, Ms Anderson was pictured with Arnautovic on June 26 at the launch of the Black & White Moods book in Melbourne.

He used the name Matt Raymon for the event.

The younger Arnautovic was charged with dangerous driving in relation to the same incident in October 2017.

At the time he had been living with Ms Anderson in east Melbourne and driving her Blue Subaru Imprezza.

He was also struggling with a drug habit, Anderson’s lawyer said.

He pleaded guilty on April 2 and was placed on a community corrections order.

He had already spent 127 days in jail over the incident on remand.
