A song titled ‘Boris Johnson is a F***ing C**t’ by cult band The K**ts has become an unlikely contender for Christmas number one after entering the top 20 charts.

The Essex punk band’s track is currently top of Spotify’s UK Viral 50 chart and second on Amazon Musics own list.

It’s competing with LadBaby, Youtubers Mark and Roxanne Hoyle, who are hoping to secure Christmas number one for the third year running – this time with their track Don’t Stop Me Eating – their take on Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin’.

Boris Johnson is the subject of an expletive-laden contender for Christmas number one, which is currently topping Spotify charts

Speaking from his home in Basildon yesterday, the band’s leader singer, known online as K**t, thanked fans and supporters for streaming the track after it rose to number eight in the midweek chart.

He told Facebook followers: ‘That is purely down to you. I want to say thanks very much and congratulations to all of you that have helped out on this in Scotland in Wales in Northern Ireland and in England.

‘We’re all in the same boat so thank you very much for coming together and showing him what you think of him.’

Amazon, iTunes and Spotify currently have four versions of the song, which vary in length.

There is also a Spotify playlist that leaves the song running for 27 hours, helping to boost numbers.

The lead singer of the band, formerly known as K*** and The Gang, added: ‘You guys have got it up to one million streams, which is more than LadBaby, it’s more than all the others, so basically I just wanted to say thank you very much, keep downloading, keep streaming.’

Charlie Brooker hailed the song as a potential Christmas number one on Halloween, when Boris Johnson announced a month-long lockdown for England.

Sharing the song’s success on Twitter yesterday, the Black Mirror writer simply said: ‘Ah, Britain.’

The Christmas Top 40 will be decided between 2pm to 4pm on Friday.
