Borussia Dortmund ‘to hold talks with Erling Haaland to clarify future amid Real Madrid interest’

Borussia Dortmund ‘are to hold showdown talks with Erling Haaland to clarify his future… with German side keen for him to stay for another season on a £12MILLION salary amid serious interest from Real Madrid’

  • Erling Haaland appeared to wave goodbye to Borussia Dortmund fans last week
  • The club’s CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke confirmed Real Madrid’s interest in him
  • But the Norwegian’s agent Mino Raiola did not rule out him staying in Germany
  • AS report the club will meet the Norway striker to clear up his long-term future

Borussia Dortmund will hold talks with star striker Erling Haaland to clear up his future at the club.

The Norwegian sparked fears of a January exit last week after appearing to wave goodbye to the fans after his side’s 3-0 win against Bundesliga strugglers Greuther Furth.

Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke also acknowledged LaLiga giants Real Madrid’s interest in the 21-year-old forward, but Haaland’s agent Mino Raiola has since revealed he has not ‘ruled out’ the striker staying for another season.

The conflicting information has led to a lack of clarity surrounding the former RB Salzburg forward’s future, with a meeting between Watzke and Raiola a few days ago failing to clear the situation up.

But now Spanish outlet AS report the Bundesliga outfit have taken matters into their own hands and have scheduled a meeting with Haaland and his agents to clarify his future.

The report adds Dortmund are keen for the Norway international to remain at Signal Iduna Park for another season, and are therefore prepared to increase his salary for that 12-month period to €14million (£11.9m).

Reports suggest Haaland currently earns €8m (£6.8m) per year at the Bundesliga outfit, but Dortmund are said to want Haaland to decide whether he will stay or go in the meeting, as well as choosing his next destination if he decides to do the latter.

Mino Raiola says it is not a forgone conclusion that the Norwegian will depart in the summer

Next summer, Haaland’s release clause of £64m comes into effect, which could lead to him departing Dortmund. But AS claim if he agrees to stay another season he will also be allowed to leave for a fixed amount in 2023.

Madrid would view Haaland’s arrival in 2023 as ideal to replace Karim Benzema, who will be 35 in 18 months’ time, but the Spanish giants would be equally open to a move this summer, the report claims.

Watzke told BILD: ‘I know that all European top clubs want him especially Real Madrid. The big interest of Real is confirmed. I think someday the Spanish league would fit better to him than the English. In general we’re hoping he stays.’

There is also a chance that Haaland could remain in Germany, with BILD recently reporting that Bayern Munich could sell Robert Lewandowski in order to fund a bid for the prolific youngster.

Lewandowski’s future at Bayern is uncertain, with his contract set to expire in 2023 and the club reportedly hesitant to extend his deal.

Haaland boasts a hugely impressive record of 74 goals in 76 appearances for Dortmund since he joined from Salzburg in January 2020.
