Boss of jail that houses hundreds of sex offenders is accused of possessing child pornography 

One of Australia’s top prison bosses who runs a jail housing hundreds of sex offenders is accused of possessing child pornography

  • Mr Harper ran a jail which had over 300 beds that housed many sex offenders 

A prison boss who runs a jail housing hundreds of sex offenders has been charged with child pornography offences.   

Wayne Harper, 57, general manager of medium security Marngoneet Correctional Centre, west of Melbourne, was charged with possessing child abuse material and knowingly possessing child pornography. 

The correctional centre Harper ran featured an extension to jail, Karreenga, located in Lara, Victoria which is a 300-bed complex that houses many sex offenders.

The Department of Justice and Community Safety told the Herald Sun a Corrections Victoria prison officer was being investigated by police.  

‘The prison officer is no longer employed at the department. As the matter is the subject of an ongoing police investigation, it would be inappropriate to comment further,’ the department said in a statement. 

‘The integrity of Victoria’s corrections system is of the highest priority and all staff are required to uphold the utmost levels of professionalism and ethics.’

Mr Harper has been bailed to appear at Geelong Magistrates’ Court on November 13.  

Police said the investigation is ongoing.

Mr Harper quickly rose through the ranks of Corrections Victoria after he started casual work at Marngoneet in 2006. 

He previously worked in the manufacturing industry and small business and has worked at several prisons. 

Mr Harper is also the project manager for Inside Out Parenting Program, which was created to reduce the level of intergenerational crime.
