The 47-year-old driver fled the scene on foot before police arrived.

However, a police dog has been hailed a hero after managing to track down the man, who was revealed to be Rogers.

Checks made on the Holden Captiva soon revealed it to be an outstanding stolen vehicle that was taken from a smash repairs.

Rocky the police dog was soon on scene and wasted no time in tracking down Rogers, dragging his handler across multiple paddocks and lanes of traffic.

Police told Nine News that Rocky called on Rogers to surrender, which he ‘decided was the best idea’.

It is understood Rogers stole the car from the Wallan smash repairs on Friday night, but workers at the repair shop said it had no breaks.
