Armed police put Bournemouth University on lockdown after reports of ‘knifeman covered in blood’ on campus

  • Students and staff claim university is on lockdown amid reports of a stabbing
  • Final year student Ross Millen said police helicopters are onsite and ambulances 
  • Two Twitter users claim a man ‘covered in blood’ was trying to enter building 

Bournemouth University was on lockdown on for ’50 minutes’ amid reports of a ‘knifeman covered in blood’ on campus.  

Twitter user Oliver McManus said: ‘A man was sighted with a knife and the campus was placed into lockdown for around 50 minutes. 

‘A man with the same description was later seen “covered in blood, trying to get into” the buildings. Armed police were on site.’

A university spokesman said: ‘We can confirm that our Talbot Campus is now reopen – thank you for your cooperation during this time.’ 

Final year student, Ross Millen, said: ‘Bournemouth University currently on lockdown. 

‘Cause is unconfirmed but sightings of a man covered in blood have been reported and mentions of a gun being brought on to site.

‘University buses have been temporarily suspended and police are on-site and in the air with helicopters.’

Student Rachel Carroll, 19, said: ‘A man walked into the SUBU building covered in blood. 

‘It’s not sure yet if it’s a knife or a gun. But everyone is on lockdown, students and lecturers.’

Another student said: ‘I have an American girl in my seminar and she’s sat on the floor hiding under the table. Locked the door.

‘Not a drill!’ 

Another Twitter user said: ‘Bournemouth University is on lockdown with security all over the premises. 

‘A man ‘covered in blood tried to get inside SUBU’ according to a woman inside the building. Student and staff are being told to stay where they are.’

According to Toby Foster students and staff are being told a stabbing has taken place. 

He wrote on Twitter: ‘Entire campus currently on lockdown here at Bournemouth University.

‘Large numbers of armed police onsite. Fire and ambulance also arriving. 

‘We’re told a stabbing has taken place.’ 

According to the Bournemouth Echo the university released a statement saying: ‘We were asked to close the campus by police for an investigation.

‘That is now complete and as such, the campus has reopened.’  

Student Adam McGroarty said: ‘In the last few moments people have started to be let out of the buildings here.’ 

A local bus company temporarily suspended its route through the university but service has now resumed. 

Police are preparing to release a statement on the incident.

A Bournemouth University spokesperson said he also shortly release a statement.
