Boxing Day holiday airfare tips to save thousands

Boxing Day is one of the best days to grab cheap airfares as many travel companies launch sales with up to 70 per cent off.

Now bargain hunters can follow a list of tricks that help them score the best airfares possible, according to Escape.

Kayak and Cheapflights Asia Pacific head Amy Wei said Boxing Day sales can offer customers up to 70 per cent off the regular cost of airfares.

One of her tips is to get up early on the 26th to grab a deal before they’re all gone.

‘You’ve got to act quickly because these sales typically only last for a few days. To snag yourself a bargain holiday, the secret is to be ready bright and early on Boxing Day,’ she said.

Staying up late can also have benefits as deals are released later than Australia in Europe and America.

Adding up the cost of your trip is another key point to remember, as an early flight may cost more as it’s likely you’ll need to taxi to the airport.

Keeping an open mind is also a good idea for travellers looking to save money.

‘You’ll often find the biggest bargains are for places that aren’t necessarily on your bucket list.’

Looking at the routes less travelled may also be beneficial. Gateway cities other than London or Paris are often cheaper, while consider adding a stopover to provide another city to explore.

Being flexible with dates – such as travelling off-peak – will also provide better deals.

Finder.com.au editor-in-chief Angus Kidman said picking an airline that you don’t usually travel with but that offers a cheaper fare can also be a good idea.

Finally, premium economy or business class tickets are often at a much lower price during Boxing Day sales, Mr Kidman said.

‘Definitely worth considering for long-haul flights, where good sleep means you can hit the ground running to make the most of your holiday time.’
