A one-year-old boy has died in a Queensland hospital after he was run over by a car being driven by his grandmother.

The boy was struck after he ran down the driveway of his family’s home in Heatley, Townsville about 5:40pm on Tuesday.

It’s understood the boy had followed his grandmother outside as she was leaving the home.

The grandmother was unaware her grandson was outside when she accidentially struck him in a Toyota Prado while driving out onto the road.

Witnesses claimed she quickly exited her vehicle, scooped up the boy and ran back inside the home, reports the Townsville Bulletin.

She left the home moments later and put the boy the car before rushing him to hospital, where he later died.

Police have established a crime scene and are investigating.
