Boy, 17, is charged with battery and assault after he targeted and attacked a sex-offender who had appeared on a notice card mailed to the teen’s home

  • Tyrin Calloway, 17, was charged with a misdemeanor battery and also a hate crime charge 
  • Calloway noticed the man in a Central City convenience store on the 200 block of South Claiborne Avenue at around 1.30am on Tuesday morning
  • He accused the sex offender of having raped his relative, which police later learned was a lie 
  • Trying to deescalate the scene, the man left the store but Calloway followed in his car
  • Calloway punched the man repeatedly and caused him to bleed 
  • The victim had extensive swelling on his head and face and was rushed to a local hospital
  • Police say that Calloway allegedly waived his right to remain silent and admitted to what happend    

A teenage boy has been given an adult hate crime charge after he attacked a man who had appeared on a mailed sex-offender notice that was sent to his Louisiana home. 

Tyrin Calloway, 17, was charged with a misdemeanor battery and also a hate crime charge, according to court records obtained by NOLA. 

Calloway was detained after engaging with the man – who has not been named – after noticing him in a Central City convenience store on the 200 block of South Claiborne Avenue at around 1.30am on Tuesday morning.

The teen confronted the man and claimed that he raped one of his relative. 

Trying to deescalate the scene, the man left the store and walked to the corner of South Johnson Street and Jackson Avenue. Calloway followed in his car. 

He is said to have exited his vehicle, punching the man with both of his fists. 

When police arrived, they found the man bleeding heavily. They soon learned that he had cuts and swelling to his face and to his head. He was transported to the Oschner Baptist Medical Center.

Upon handcuffing and questioning Calloway, police learned that from the teen that the victim was on a sex-offender notice card that the teen had received. Calloway had allegedly waived his right to remain silent. 

The teen reportedly confessed to lying about the rape allegations, prompting police to believe that the teen had just based the attack off the flier he received. 

The teen was booked as an adult and as of Friday morning he remained in custody even in lieu of $7,500 bail. 

Calloway could see himself incarcerated for six months if convicted for the misdemeanor and another six if he gets convicted for the hate crime charge.
