Two-year-old boy is killed by subway train after his mother was tying his shoelace and he fell off the platform in lower Manhattan

A two-year-old boy was killed after he separated from his mother and was fatally struck by a subway train in lower Manhattan on Wednesday night.  

The boy, who has not yet been publicly identified, entered the Fulton Street station with his mother during rush hour traffic. 

A police source told DailyMail.com the mother way tying the child’s shoe and he pulled away just as the train entered the station.

Witnesses say the young boy was a few steps ahead of his mother and, in circumstances still being investigated, lost his footing.  

The toddler was struck by a northbound 2 train around 5.36pm, getting stuck between the platform and the train. 

An alarmed witness told The New York Post: ‘The mother was coming down the stairs with three bags. The little boy was in front of her and there was another train [that] was coming from Flatbush.’

‘He saw the train, the train was a little faster, so he walked right through the train.’ 

New York City Transit President Andy Byford revealed that around 20 MTA workers pushed the train car back to remove the child from the confine.

WLNY reports that officers were forced to use airbags to lift the train. 

The boy, who suffered severe body trauma, was quickly transported to the New York-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital where he succumbed to is injuries and died.

Authorities are examining the accident and are still investigating the moments leading up to the boy's fall

The New York City Transit shared a press release on Twitter, saying that the investigation is ongoing.

‘Our hearts break for the family and the MTA is praying for them. Our thoughts are with the crew of the train as well. 

The NYCT continued to share their condolences over the tragic accident on social media in a later tweet.

‘We cannot imagine their pain, and we cannot adequately convey our thoughts in 280 characters, so we’ll just remind everyone out there to be kind and take care of one another,’ they wrote.  

The scary situation caused delays on the one, two and three lines for some time after the incident first occurred. 

Authorities say there are no apparent signs of criminal intentions and are not investigating the accident as such.
