Louisa County Sheriff’s Office told WTVR that the child thought the gun was a toy when he found it and pulled the trigger.

‘It’s of paramount importance to make sure your guns are secured and out of the reach of children and everything,’ Major Donald A. Lowe said.

‘At least have them unloaded or a safety lock on them, whatever you have to do to keep them from being discharged accidentally,’ he told the station.

The children’s mother was at the home when the shooting occurred. Authorities said the incident will be investigated thoroughly.

A second tragedy occurred in Roanoke, Virginia, where a two-year-old boy died after accidentally shooting himself.

Police said an officer was flagged down by a vehicle just after 12pm.
