Ms Melvin and Mr Eaton had been the boy’s foster parents for around a year before the process was formally completed yesterday.

Altogether 37 children were given hearings throughout the course of the day at the courthouse in Grand Rapids.

‘It’s Adoption Day at the Kent County Courthouse. 37 children are being lovingly and officially welcomed by their families,’ Kent County officials said on Facebook.

Not-for-profit Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Kent County later posted on social media: ‘It’s adoption day at the courthouse — the BEST day of the year!’

‘Congratulations to Michael and his family . . . so cool that his entire class came to support him!’

Michael’s adoptive mother described how they were inspired to invite the whole class to attend after her son’s teacher, Mrs. McKee mentioned the idea to her.

His new father told CNN: ‘We didn’t have any kids prior to that, and things got pretty chaotic in a hurry.’

The couple have been married for nearly 10 years. They say Michael is popular at school, sporty and enjoys basketball and swimming among other activities.
