The boy ran out behind the car while it was being reversed and became trapped under on the back wheels.

Paramedics attempted to treat the boy at the scene but were unable to save his life, and he was pronounced dead at 3.30pm.

The forensic crash unit are investigating the scene.

Marcus Cryer of Queensland Police said the boy’s family were ‘extremely distraught’.

‘As you would be losing a child at Christmas,’ he said.

A neighbour told the Courier-Mail the family had just moved into the house.

‘It was sold about a month ago. We saw all the emergency crews come down the street and police have taped it off, ‘ the woman said.

The woman said she saw a moving van at the house a week before the tragedy.

A police officer who notified waiting media of the boy’s death began to cry while delivering the news.

Police and paramedics rushed to the scene of the accident but there was little they could do once they arrived.
