Boy says brother ‘deserved’ to be punched in schoolyard

The older brother of a 12-year-old boy who was allegedly punched in the face by another student appears to have little sympathy for his brother.

Holding his push bike and wearing a helmet as he left his family home, the 18-year-old boy told a 7 News reporter his little brother ‘probably deserved it to be honest’.

The shocking moment the young boy was punched in the face at Wagga Wagga High School by a 14-year-old boy was caught on camera.

The 14-year-old boy was suspended and is expected to discuss his future at the local police station Wednesday night.

The incident, south-west of Sydney, was supplied to 9News, and appears to have been filmed on a smartphone. 

It shows the two boys facing each other surrounded by other students.  

Suddenly the older boy lashes out at the younger student, striking him in the face with his closed fist.

Seemingly stunned, the 12-year-old leans against a brick wall before falling heavily to the ground.

Education Minister Rob Stokes told 7 News he was ‘sickened and appalled’ by the actions of the young student which he described as a ‘cowardly attack

Police are investigating the incident in the Riverina, south-west of Sydney, after the Year 7 student was punched in the face by a 14-year-old boy

The boy is recovering at home and is not seriously hurt, his father told 9News.

In a statement, the school said they had a ‘zero tolerance policy towards violence’.

‘Any student who is found to have participated in an offence that puts at risk the safety of another student will be dealt with decisively through their school’s discipline code, and if warranted, face further criminal charges.

‘Schools are a place of learning, where both staff and students have the right to feel safe.

‘The main priority now is the care and recovery of the victim, whose family has asked for privacy.’

Police were not called immediately to the scene but are investigating the incident.
