A yob who spat in his girlfriend’s face at an airport after he accused her of leaving his dog ‘home alone’ has been jailed for 16 weeks.

Kyle Samuels, 29, confronted Sophie Redshaw at Manchester Airport as she walked through the arrivals hall after her flight from Ibiza had landed.

He claimed Miss Redshaw had agreed to look after his pet only to then fly out to the Balearic Islands.

Samuels alleges he found out via friends the animal had been left unattended.

Samuels, from Sale, Greater Manchester was arrested after being chased by police through a car park.

It is not known whether Miss Redshaw underwent any medical tests following the incident last July 23.

In a statement she said: ‘I want him out of my life, he makes it a misery. I am always scared at what he is going to do.’

At Greater Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court, Samuels admitted assault by beating and wept as he was jailed.

Prosecuting, James Towey, said: ‘He approached the victim at Manchester Airport after she had returned home early from a trip from Ibiza and he spat in her face.

‘He then attempted to evade police capture at the airport and ran through a car park before he was eventually kicked to the back of his leg by a police officer who managed to detain him.

‘He was arrested and charged with common assault but initially denied the allegations. He had said that he confronted the victim as she had left his dog unattended and this upset him.

‘I have had contact from the victim and I appeal for a restraining order against him for her. It would be for him not to come in contact with her or visit her address and I ask for this to be indefinite.’

In mitigation defence lawyer Jon Mail, said: ‘He was contacted by mutual friends and told that his dog was left alone – that’s how he found out. The complainant had told him that she wasn’t abroad, she was in Salford.

‘The complainant still has his dog and he has no intention of getting the dog returned to him. He has, during the course of this proceedings, been living at his mother’s address, but he wants to live at his own address.

‘He was the victim of violence himself. He was once stabbed in his left leg and and that has caused him some problems.

‘This would have been extremely unpleasant and frightening for the young lady, but the major point from this is that he accepts that the relationship is over.

‘This was an angry reaction on his behalf that the dog had left alone and he totally accepts that this was wrong of him. He has no intention of getting back the dog, as far as he is concerned the complainant can have it.’

Sentencing, District Judge James Hatton told Samuels: ‘You have a temper and you act on your temper.

‘Your record shows a number of previous convictions and there are sinister undertones to this one.

‘The defendant returns home early from holiday and is confronted by you. You verbally abused her and spat in her face. This is so serious that prison is the only option for you.’

Samuels was also banned from contacting Miss Redshaw under the terms of an indefinite restraining order and was ordered to pay a £115 victim surcharge.
