Brave mother gives birth in the front seat of her car

Alexandra Valk gave birth to her son on Friday

Childbirth almost never goes to plan – but some babies are more determined that others to come into the world at the most inconvenient time.

That was the case for Alexandra Valk, 39, who was on the way to the hospital when her waters broke, forcing her to give birth in her car on the side of the road at 6.30am.

Her husband Leon was driving across the Anzac Bridge, Sydney, on the way to the hospital as she went through the late stages of labour – and she told 9 News that she knew they ‘weren’t going to make it’.

She was right – they never made it to the hospital, but some sharp-eyed police officers noticed the couple and stopped to help them with the birth.

And that’s how Alexandra and Leon’s second child, a healthy baby boy, was born on the front seat of their car at 6.47am.

The sweet moment that a beaming Mr Valk carried his newborn son from the car to the ambulance was caught on video, before the family were transported to the hospital.

There is no name yet for the infant, but under the title ‘midwife’ on the birth certificate is Leon’s name.

Speaking to Channel 9, Paramedic Sean Pointon said that a few paramedics squeezed themselves inside the vehicle to assist the mother.

‘One of those officers assisted dad in delivering the child, and did a wonderful job,’ he said.

Paramedic Helen Atkins said that Mr Valk was ‘really chuffed’ at the chance to deliver his child, a younger brother for 3-year-old Harriet Valk.

‘He was a really excited dad,’ she said, beaming. ‘My partner got him to cut the cord’.

Mr Valk said that while he thought the baby was dong all the work, but he was excited to be there to ‘catch him on the way out’.

The couple is now considering naming the child Arthur, which is the closest cross-street to where he was born.

Paramedics and police officers involved in he birth stopped by the hospital on Saturday morning to check on the family, all of whom have recovered from their son’s abrupt entrance into the world.
