Brazil’s World Cup clash with Switzerland was briefly suspended just before half-time after the stadium floodlights turned off and plunged the stadium into darkness.

The bizarre moment occurred shortly before half-time, just as Brazil were preparing to take a corner in their bid to break the deadlock at Stadium 974.

Just before the kick was taken, all four stadium floodlights turned off simultaneously, leaving the players bemused, while the referee did his best to work out what was happening.

Thankfully, the lights turned on again less than 10 seconds later, allowing the game to resume without too much interference.

The incident will likely have sparked panic in the stadium’s control room, with the brand new arena not having suffered any issues in previous matches.

The stadium, a 44,000-seater arena in Ras Abu Aboud, is one of the venues purpose-built specifically for the tournament.

It held its first match less than a year ago, and at the 2022 World Cup has played host to Mexico 0-0 Poland, Portugal 3-2 Ghana and France 2-1 Denmark before the Brazil-Switzerland game on Monday.

It will also go on to host Poland vs Argentina and Serbia vs Switzerland in the group stages, before a round of 16 game next week.

Stadium officials will be hoping no further incidents occur, as the spotlight continues to shine on the organization of the tournament in Qatar.

In the match itself, Brazil went on to narrowly win, courtesy of a Casemiro goal in the latter stages.

The victory puts Brazil in cruise control in their group, with two wins from two, while Switzerland are still in pole position to qualify in second.
