Morrison was born in Lorain, Ohio, in 1931 to a working-class African American family.
She credited her parents, Ramah (née Willis) and George Wofford, with instilling in her a sense of heritage and language through African-American folktales, which she used in becoming one of the foremost black authors in American history.
