The Research and Development Center for Geological Disaster Technology said there was a noticeable increase in the crater rate at 6.00am – about 2 hours before the eruption.
The Regional Disaster Management Agency has urged people around Mount Merapi to evacuate.
Merapi is the most active volcano in Indonesia and thousands of people live in villages on the flanks of the volcano.
‘Residents who live in a radius of 5km from the crater of Merapi is expected to come down and evacuate,’ Edi Danarto of the Quick Reaction Team said.
Stunned villagers lined the streets at the foot of the volcano to record the sight of thick smoke billowing from the mountain above.
Previous eruptions have caused fatalities, including a large explosion in 1994 which killed 27 people in November.
