Brian May thanks wife Anita Dobson for her care after heart attack

Brian May has praised his wife Anita Dobson on their 20th wedding anniversary for saving his life after he suffered a heart attack.

The Queen icon, 73, expressed his thanks to his former EastEnders actress, 71, and said he was ‘grateful to be alive’ after having a ‘cluster of things go wrong.’

In May, Brian revealed he was recovering from a ripped muscle and trapped nerve as a result of a gardening injury, when he suffered a heart attack amid his recovery.

Appearing on BBC Morning Live on Wednesday, he said: ‘It’s 20 years, it’s china I believe, we’ve been together 34 though.

‘She did save my life. I had this whole cluster of things go wrong. It was a good job it was lockdown in a way but I was incapacitated with the heart attack, complications from the drugs, then I had sciatica so badly. I couldn’t even crawl.

‘So when you get that bad, you’re just grateful to be alive at the end of it and its thanks to Anita that I am, she’s been there the whole way through it

‘She’s taken care of me and nursed me and whatever.’

Back in October,  Brian said he’s ‘grateful to be alive’ after having ‘a catalogue of disasters’ including a heart attack and a near-fatal allergic reaction to medication earlier this year.

Speaking candidly on Good Morning Britain about his ordeal, the rocker detailed being in ‘excruciating’ pain following an allergic reaction to medication after he had stents fitted to clear his three blocked arteries.

The guitarist, who was chatting alongside West End star Mazz Murray, explained: ‘Yea it was pretty bad and the complications that came afterwards were pretty bad.

‘It’s been a big mountain to get up to strength again but it’s become my new religion really.

‘I’m happy to be alive because three years ago, that wouldn’t have happened. I had three stents in me, which are working just fine and I feel good.’

In May, Brian revealed he was recovering from a ripped muscle and trapped nerve as a result of a gardening injury, when he suffered a heart attack amid his recovery.

Going on to discuss how he had an allergic reaction the medication he was on, the musician went on: ‘That’s the point I nearly lost my life really, if anyone wants to talk about it get in touch with me.

‘Stents are good for the heart, but it isn’t good for the body… the worst thing I had was a stomach haemorrhage, I lost a lot of blood.

‘I couldn’t get off the floor, I couldn’t move… the pain was so excruciating, I couldn’t do the operation at the time. The heart operation was a doddle compared to this.’

Brian explained that he ‘wasn’t ruling out’ the possibility that his heart attack was a result of having COVID-19 without realising it.

‘It’s possible because the virus does thicken the blood, a lot of people get heart attacks or strokes. The only thing is I don’t tick any of the boxes for a heart attack, I don’t drink, I don’t smoke. It’s only a theory, I don’t know.’

Brian said his wife Anita helped him ‘literally and figuratively’, after he gushed earlier this week to the Daily Express: ‘She totally saved my life because I couldn’t do anything and she just kind of nursed me, so I will forever be in her debt, she did an incredible job on me.’
