Bridal party find ‘dozens of blood filled bugs’ in Gold Coast hotel

A dream wedding turned into a nightmare experience for a young bride after finding her hotel room riddled with ‘blood-filled’ bugs.

Isabel Chan was set to be married at picturesque Stradbroke Island in Queensland, and checked into a Meriton Holiday Apartments on the Gold Coast with her bridesmaids before the big day.

Describing it as the ‘wedding from hell’, she said her four-year-old flower girl found 20 ‘blood-filled bugs’ swarming around her head as she lay in bed.

‘It looked like a spider’s nest had hatched on her pillow,’ Ms Chan told Nine News.

She claimed all three rooms her party had booked were infested with bugs.

Phone recordings show Ms Chan called the hotel manager who was made aware of the problem, but they refused to do anything about it.

‘No amount of pleading for a new room… made any difference,’ Ms Chan said.

The bridal party had no choice but to camp out on the tiled floors and leather couches.

Things then went from ‘bad to worse’ when they were confronted by ‘extremely rude’ hotel staff who didn’t believe the rooms were full of bugs.

They were eventually issued a small refund and were moved to another apartment, but the hotel asked for payment for the extra beds.

Ms Chan claims the hotel also asked for a cleaning fee, but then waived it.

‘All in our party were weary, astounded and outraged.’

She said the reaction of the hotel staff was ‘appalling to say the least’, and that all the help they received had to be demanded.

She eventually made it down the aisle but her mother was unable to accompany her due to the delays caused by issues with the hotel.

In a statement Meriton Holiday Apartments said the guests were given the option of a full refund so they could relocate to another hotel or another apartment at a rate of $280.

‘They chose to stay at the Meriton. The rate is usually $300 to $350 for four guests, however six guests stayed at no additional charge for the two extra guests.’
