Bridegroom fights for life after falling 12ft through banister on the way to honeymoon suite on his wedding night

A bridegroom has been left fighting for his life after falling 12ft from a banister on the way to his honeymoon suite on his wedding night to his ‘soulmate’.

Chris Mallon had just married his bride Avril when he suffered a ‘significant brain injury’ after plunging onto a paved area on in the early hours of Saturday morning last week.

It came just hours after Chris, who was in his 50s and Avril, tied the knot surrounded by their friends and family at the Macdonald Houstoun House hotel in Uphall, West Lothian in Scotland.

Following the accident, Chris was put into an induced coma, and since then Avril has been keeping a bedside vigil.

The Daily Record reported that Chris also had a significant back injury and damage to his heart.

Writing on Facebook Avril said the pair had had a perfect day and that she wanted to inform everyone of what had happened.

‘I can’t believe I am writing this post about my husband, my soulmate.

‘I just want everyone to know the truth and understand what happened on the night of our wedding.

‘Friday was just perfect we had the most amazing day and night celebrating with our family and friends at the McDonald Houston House Hotel.’

She added that at the end of the night after the guest left, a staff member at the hotel had helped Chris to take gifts and cards up to the suite – which is in a separate building.

‘At the top of the stairs Chris lost his footing and he went to grab the banister and fell right through the large gap down 12-foot onto the pavement below.

‘This was an accident waiting to happen.

‘Myself and his family have never left his side and we are just praying and hoping that our love will pull him through.

The hotel is a popular wedding venue and the main building dates all the way back to the 16th Century.

On the morning of the wedding day Chris said on Facebook: ‘Looking forward to our big day. Hope everything goes well.’

Today, Avril shared the heart breaking news that her new husband was in a critical condition, thanking everyone for their kind words she said ‘I wish I could tell you better news’.

‘Sadly more bad news that Chris has a significant brain injury, significant lung injury, and back injury and damage to his heart.

‘On top of this he has developed an infection he is still in an induced coma and critical. ‘I will keep you all updated.’ 

Following her tragic post, worried loved ones passed on their well wishes. Sarah Blanch said. ‘My heart goes out for you Avril. My thoughts to you and Chris and family.’ 

This is while Deborah Binnie added: ‘Can’t stop thinking of you all. Hope Chris is on his way to recovering soon.’

In a statement, the Scottish Ambulance Service said: ‘We were called to Macdonald Houstoun House shortly before 2am last Saturday.

‘We dispatched two ambulances to the scene, with the first crew arriving at 2.04am.

‘We transported one male patient in his 50s to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.’

The incident was reported to West Lothian Council and is also being investigated by environmental health officers.

A West Lothian Council spokesperson said: ‘We are aware of an incident and an investigation is currently underway in line with health and safety regulations.

‘It would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.’

A Macdonald Hotels spokeswoman told the Edinburgh Evening News: ‘Our thoughts are with Christopher Mallon and his family.’
