Brisbane family mourn Darcy McCarter plane crash

A Brisbane family have spoken about their ‘beautiful’ son who died after his plane fell out of the sky.

Darcy McCarter was killed alongside another pilot on Monday afternoon after the Cessna 210 aircraft they were flying crashed outside Darwin airport.

The young man had been travelling to Elcho Island, off the coast of the Northern Territory, where he was based.

The light plane lost both wings as it ripped through bushland and crashed on a rural road shortly after take-off.

It is believed to have been carrying a dead body to the island for burial.

His father Phillip McCarter, who is an air traffic controller at AirServices Australia, wrote a Facebook post to honour his son, describing himself as ’empty’ now that Darcy is gone.

‘Many of you will already know, but we lost our beautiful boy yesterday,’ the post began.

‘He was flying out of Darwin to Elcho Island, where he was based as a pilot serving the local community. We don’t know what happened, but the plane crashed and the two pilots on board didn’t make it.

‘As you can imagine we are all absolutely heartbroken and cannot believe this has happened. We have lost our darling boy and brother to Ella. We can’t imagine our lives without him and love him with all our hearts. We love you.

‘I am empty.’

Superintendent Tony Deutrom said heavy rain at the time of the crash was being considered as a factor.

‘This time of year is quite notorious for inclement weather and that will form part of the investigation,’ he said.

‘There’s obviously a body of work that needs to be undertaken… before we can draw any conclusions as to what it was doing.’

Investigators from the Australian Transport and Safety Bureau are on their way from Canberra to investigate the 200m radius crash site.
