A lesbian couple is in shock after their request for a wedding cake was denied by a baker because she does not agree with same-sex marriage.
Sasha Patrick and her partner Moe Barr, who live in Brisbane, began planning their wedding last year before Australia legalised same-sex marriage.
They plan to tie the knot in January at Waipu on New Zealand’s North Island and asked Kath’s Devine Cakes in nearby Warkworth to make their wedding cake.

The pair said they were shocked to receive a response from ‘Kath’ declining the request.
‘I do not wish to offend either of you and I thank you for letting me know that it is a same-sex wedding,’ Kath wrote.
‘Even though as individuals you are both fabulous and amazing people, I must follow the integrity of my heart and beliefs.’
‘Our government has legalised same-sex marriages but it is not my belief they it is correct, therefore I will not support it and cannot make a wedding cake for you.’

Patrick is originally from New Zealand where same-sex marriage has been legal since 2013. It has been legal since 2005 in Barr’s native Canada.
In Australia, same-sex marriage was legalised in December following a national plebiscite.
‘We were really surprised to get that email,’ Patrick told Stuff.
‘We’ve been really open about the fact that it’s a same-sex wedding and had absolutely no problems with any of the other vendors. You just don’t expect to get a response like that these days,’ she said.
‘But ever since we shared the email on Facebook we’ve had other offers to make the cake which we’ll look in to.’
