Brisbane man is jailed for attacking his pregnant partner

The man who subjected his partner to nearly four years of physical and emotional torment, including attacking her pregnant stomach with a hammer and dousing her in a corrosive liquid, has finally been sentenced for his atrocities.

Peter Mark Wright tortured, bludgeoned and even kidnapped the woman, 25, between 2011 and 2015, at times when he was on parole and probation for domestic violence orders.

The 36-year-old father-of-eight was sentenced to nine years jail in Brisbane District Court on Wednesday, the Morning Bulletin reported.

The heinous assaults he committed on his victim include tying her to a tree and pouring sodium hydroxide over her body in attempt to disfigure her, and holding her as a prisoner in a remote farmhouse and repeatedly bashing her, resulting in a broken jaw.

‘She may never recover from what she has had to endure,’ Crown prosecutor Sandra Cupina said in court.

The woman, who could not be named for her protection, was subjected to torture, assaults, deprivation of liberty and acts designed to disfigure in areas of Brisbane, Bundaberg and Gin Gin.

The prosecution labelled Wright’s vile attacks as ‘protracted physical and psychological assaults’, which include an attempt to cut her head and hack her feet off with a machete.

In one sickening incident, Wright attempted to set the woman on fire, chasing her down the street screaming ‘I’ll light you up, I’ll f***ing light you up’.

She ran to a neighbour but Wright caught up to her, repeatedly headbutting her, stabbing her with a knife and allegedly attempting to choke her.

The neighbour then managed to hold Wright off the woman as she ran inside and washed the petrol from her body.

‘I was scared, I was in pain, my head was sore, my ribs were sore, my skin was on fire from the petrol,’ she testified in court.

Wright, in another disgusting attack, pinned her against a car and repeatedly bashed her ribs with a hammer. She was eight months pregnant at the time.

‘I was squished up against the door and he had a clear shot of my ribcage,’ the woman said. ‘He hit me at least twice, it was two very hard hits.’

‘I couldn’t lift my arm for nine weeks and when I inhaled it was like something was pinching inside my ribcage.’

He is also accused of coward punching her ‘to shut her up’, threatening to kill her several times and forcing her to take drugs.

During a trial in November last year, a jury found Wright guilty of 12 of his 15 charges.

Judge Terry Martin sentenced himto nine years behind bars, and he will be eligible for parole in five years after already serving 825 days.
