A 25-year-old man was knocked unconscious and his female friend, 22, sexually assaulted by a group of three males last Thursday.

According to police, the friends from Newcastle had spent the night at the Banjo Patterson Inn in Jindabyne before leaving about 1am to return to their hotel.

They were walking along Kosciuszko Road when confronted by three thugs opposite Foreshore Park, who brutally bashed the man, knocking him unconscious, before sexually assaulting his female friend.

The man regained consciousness and tried to help his friend but was assaulted again before he managed to run to the other side of the road and flag down a passing car.
