Britain is third highest country in the G7 ‘climate ready’ rankings, new report claims

  • Report tallies how every G7 members and also Ireland is tackling climate change
  • It highlighted Britain’s ‘strong performance’ on cutting emissions
  • Canada, the world’s fourth biggest producer and exporter of oil, was last on list

The UK is the third most ‘climate ready’ nation in the G7 group – behind only France and Germany.

A report by insurer Aviva tallied how each of the G7 members, as well as Ireland, is tackling and adapting to climate change.

It highlighted the UK’s ‘strong performance’ on cutting emissions and its commitment to be net zero by 2050.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is pictured above arriving in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt to attend the Cop27 summit. The report highlighted the UK’s ‘strong performance’ on cutting emissions and its commitment to be net zero by 2050

But Aviva said the UK should improve its protection of the natural world and increase its support for businesses tackling climate change.

Chief executive Amanda Blanc said it would ‘take leadership from government and business’ to get the UK to the top of the table.

Canada, the world’s fourth biggest producer and exporter of oil, was last on the list, only slightly lower than the US.

Ms Blanc said said: ‘I want the UK to be the most climate ready large economy in the world by 2030, as the country moves towards its net-zero targets.

‘Current financial pressures are understandably making it harder for many businesses to invest in climate action right now, even though they recognise the need to do more.’

Aviva said making the UK more climate ready will promote long-term ‘green growth’, but companies are increasingly prioritising dealing with soaring inflation over climate change.

Canada, which is the world’s fourth biggest producer and exporter of oil, was last on the list. It was only slightly lower than the USA, which has struggled under President Joe Biden to pass major environmental legislation.
