A spokesman for the force confirmed today: ‘Two British nationals have died in an accident on the A8 motorway in the municipality of Llanes, near the Balmori exit.

‘They were a couple aged 68 and 65. They were heading west in the direction of the provincial capital Oviedo when the motorbike they were on overturned for reasons which are still being investigated.

Well-placed sources said there was no indication they lived in Spain and they were believed to be holidaymakers.

The accident led to the temporary closure of part of the motorway.

It was not immediately clear where the two Brits had been heading when they suffered their tragic accident.

Llanes is popular with tourists and is well-known for its rugged coastline. It is widely considered to be one of the most beautiful towns in Spain.

Many locals emigrated to the Americas to make their fortunes and some returned rich and built large houses known collectively as the ‘Indianas.’
