British man arrested for ‘beating 18-month-old daughter to death’ at a five star hotel in Kazakhstan is identified as he is detained for two months by investigators

A British man arrested for allegedly beating his 18-month-old daughter to death in Kazakhstan has today been detained for two months and named by investigators. 

Barakat Mohamed, 41, is being held over the incident at the five-star Intercontinential Hotel in Almaty last Thursday. The girl who died is also British.

A spokesman for the Almaty inter-district court said: ‘There is no information yet about his occupation, and no details about the reason he came to Kazakhstan. We are not aware yet if his spouse is UK citizen, too.’ 

Local media reported that the girl’s mother ran into the Intercontinental lobby, ‘screaming for help’ around 7am on October 24.

A female eye witness said there was a loud cry from the woman in the main lobby.

She was in floods of tears and begging for help.

Local reports say the incident involved a ‘family conflict’, adding that the child died at the First Children’s City Hospital after repeated blows to the head.

A Foreign Office spokesperson said: ‘We are in contact with the police in Kazakhstan following the death of a British child and the arrest of a British man in Almaty.’

Saltanat Azirbek, of Almaty police department, said: ‘A pre-trial investigation has begun. Criminal case materials were passed to investigative department of Almaty police.

‘Forensic analysis was set up to determine the exact cause of the child’s death. The suspect was detained and is currently at a temporary detention centre.

‘He was charged with murder.’

The court has approved a two-month detention for the British man. 

Aliya Dauletova, the Intercontinental’s sales and marketing director, said previously: ‘The hotel’s team has provided all necessary first aid, then the ambulance doctors restored her heartbeat and rushed the child to the first city children hospital.

‘We cannot share other details due to confidentiality issues, but it’s a girl, she is about a year old. Later we learned she died at hospital.’
