A British man has been beaten to death on a Greek island by the jealous husband of a woman he was having an affair with, according to reports.

The 40-year-old British man was found dead in a hotel on the island of Ithaca on Sunday after he suffered severe head injuries.

His alleged attacker, a 54-year-old man who lived on the island, was said to have flown into a rage and beaten the British tourist at the Familia Hotel in the town of Vathy.

The Briton was kicked and punched in the head and body in his hotel room, InKefalonia reports.

After the attack, the suspect was said to have got a taxi from the victim's hotel in Vathy to the nearby village where he was said to lives

The alleged attacker, who is said to be a businessman who owns a supermarket in the area, then got a taxi to the nearby village where he lives, reports state.

According to local media, the British man arrived last Thursday and began an affair with the suspect’s wife – a 42-year-old British woman, who is believed to have a South African passport.

A row over custody of the couple’s eight-year-old daughter is thought to be behind the attack, with the couple having had marital problems for months, local media report.

Police launched a murder investigation and said a suspect was arrested the next day. 

The woman was said to have been present during the attack, but left not realising the seriousness of the injuries, according to local media. 

The man and his wife are being held by the attorney general on the nearby island of Kefalonia, police said.

In a statement to local media, the Ithaca Police Department said: ‘The investigation was resolved immediately, following a systematic and thorough investigation by the Argostoli Security Department in collaboration with the Ithaca Police Department, after a fatal injury to a 40-year-old in Ithaca.

‘The 40-year-old foreigner was found dead in a hotel room in Ithaca and informed the Ithaca Police Department and the corresponding Health Centre.’

An Foreign Office spokesman said: ‘We are supporting the family of a British man following his death in Ithaca and are in contact with the Greek authorities.’
