A British man has been arrested at Brisbane airport after allegedly trying to flee the country following a fatal hit and run on Monday.

The 52-year-old, who has been living on the Gold Coast, was allegedly caught with a one-way ticket to London on Tuesday morning, just hours after a motorcyclist was killed in a crash.

He is accused of colliding with two motorcycles on Tweed Valley Way in Tumbulgum, nearby the Queensland NSW border, just before 3.30pm on Monday.

One rider died at the scene, while the second escaped with minor injuries.

Police allege the British national failed to stop at the scene.

The car he was allegedly driving, a bright blue Hyundai i30 with a smashed windscreen, missing front bumper, and Queensland number plate 170 ZCP, has not been found.

The man was arrested before boarding a plane, and is currently being held in a Brisbane watch house.

He is yet to be charged over his alleged involvement in the crash.

He will face a hearing at Brisbane Magistrates Court on Tuesday to extradite him back to NSW once charges have been laid.
