British principal of private school is shot and seriously wounded outside his home in Guyana after expelled pupil threatened to ‘shoot up’ the school

  • Dr O’Toole has since taken to Facebook to reveal he was hit by two bullets

The British director of a private school in Guyana has been shot outside his home, hours after a student was expelled for threatening to ‘shoot up’ the school.

Dr. Brian O’Toole, principal of the School Of Nations in the capital of Georgetown, was shot twice after returning from a dinner on Sunday evening.

Earlier in the day, he had hosted an emergency meeting with parents at the school to discuss a the threat made against the lives of other students by a pupil.

The unnamed student had posted a WhatsApp message threatening to ‘Shoot Up’ the school. 

This was reported to teachers and Dr O’Toole, and although the student said the message had been a joke, he was expelled from the fee-paying school.

According to reports the student recently returned to Guyana from the United States where he had been living for three years.

Dr. O’Toole was rushed to hospital where he remains in a stable condition, according to a post on the social media network.

Writing on Monday, Dr. O’Toole thanked parents and students at the School of Nations for their support and revealed he was ‘getting the best possible treatment’.

Describing the Sunday evening incident, he added: ‘There were three bullets fired at me. I was struck by two of them. 

‘One did minor damage on the right arm and the other was more serious on the left where the bone was badly damaged. I am getting better and will likely be in the hospital for a few days.’

In a separate Facebook post, the school wrote it would be putting security measures in place following the shooting.    

Dr. O’Toole helped open the private school and who have been living in Guyana for 40 years. 

A police spokesman said they are investigating both incidents.
