‘He was on holiday and was staying at the tourist apartment where the incident happened.’

The unnamed teenager is understood to have been on holiday with friends, and was staying at a nearby hotel.

A source close to the investigation said: ‘It appears he had a group of six friends staying at the apartments where the tragedy happened but he was not a guest.

A well-placed source said: 'An investigation is underway and is being conducted by Mossos d'Esquadra in the nearby town of Blanes but witnesses have said it was an accident and he wasn't trying to jump from balcony to balcony or anything like that

‘The friends had been told when they checked in that they couldn’t bring back people who were not guests with them but they were caught twice trying to smuggle friends in and seem to have managed to get the pal who died into the apartments shortly before the tragedy.

‘Some of them were on the balcony with him when he fell.

‘They have gone to the local police station to give statements.’

The source added: ‘The friends are in a terrible state and have been crying. One of the friends raised the alarm and rushed down to reception shouting.’
