Britons reveal the 2021 experiences they’re most desperate for post-Covid – and it’s Lake District walks that’s No1, followed by a Cornish cream tea and inhaling fresh Highland air

Researchers polled the nation to discover the British places Britons want to visit as soon as the Covid crisis is over – and it’s a walking holiday in the Lake District that emerged as number one in the study (31 per cent).
Scoffing a traditional cream tea in Cornwall (28 per cent) and taking in the fresh air and spectacular views of the Scottish Highlands (22 per cent) came second and third in the bucket list ranking.
When asked where UK travellers are at their happiest, 22 per cent loved nothing better than a blustery walk on the beach on the Devon coast (fourth in the ranking), while a more cosmopolitan one in five (20 per cent, fifth) would prefer to attend a glittering West End show in the Big Smoke.

In the list created by the poll, which was commissioned by LNER (London North Eastern Railway), the rest of the top 10 comprised eating an ice-cream on Brighton’s famous beach (16 per cent, sixth); going shopping in the historic city of Bath (13 per cent, seventh); visiting York’s famous Minster (12 per cent, eighth); eating fish and chips in Suffolk (12 per cent, ninth); and drinking a pint of bitter in a picturesque Yorkshire pub (12 per cent, 10th).
Other sights Britons are eager to visit included the Northumberland coast and eating fresh seafood in the fashionable fishing port of Padstow in north Cornwall (both 11 per cent).
Buying a souvenir from Edinburgh’s Royal Mile (nine per cent), seeing the deer in London’s Richmond Park (eight per cent) and fossil hunting in the West Dorset town of Lyme Regis also featured in the top 20 list of happy places.
Harrogate, Cambridge and Lincolnshire also featured in the top 20 list of places to visit.

Meanwhile, a romantic 14 per cent insisted they were well overdue a night away with their other half.
And almost a quarter (24 per cent) said as soon as a vaccine is widely available they will be hot-footing it on holiday, with only 11 per cent in the survey of 1,000 saying they would consider booking a trip abroad once vaccinated.

‘It’s encouraging to see the appetite to explore the UK with the history and sights we have available, the vaccine will encourage explorers to come and find castles, cathedrals and coastlines on home soil.’
