Broncos head coach Sean Payton ‘is projected to earn between $17m-$20m per season in a new five-year deal’… as ownership hopes the ex-Saints leader can turn around an underperforming team

The Denver Broncos paid a hefty price to acquire new head coach Sean Payton – and now they’re giving him a kings ransom for moving to the Mile High City.

According to reports, the Broncos are signing Payton to one of the richest coaching contracts in the league’s history.

Payton’s five-year contract will be worth somewhere between $17million and $20million per season, according to Reuters.

NBC Sports says the price tag is at $18m – which would put him as the second best paid coach in the NFL.

According to Pro Football Network, if Payton was earning $18m a year, he’d be behind only New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick across the entire league.

Last season was a disaster for the Broncos – who began the 2022 campaign as Darkhorse favorites for a run to the Super Bowl.

Instead, the team fell to 5-12 record – which includes a league worst 1-8 mark on the road and a 1-5 record in an AFC West division they were supposed to compete in.

Their first round draft pick ended up being the fifth pick overall, but that draft selection now belongs to the Seattle Seahawks after the Broncos traded for Russell Wilson.

Denver fired head coach Nathaniel Hackett midway through the season – after the former Packers offensive coordinator led the worst scoring offense in the league.
