Brother relives moment he found murdered sister’s body – as he fights to keep serial killer jailed

Paul Quinn has relived the horrific moment he found his murdered sister’s body inside her home – as he continues to fight for her killer to remain behind bars.

Reginald Kenneth Arthurell was on trial for the death of two men and was a suspect in four other murders when he brutally killed Venet Mulhall at her Coonabarabran home in New South Wales, in 1997.

‘This man should not have been out of prison when he killed my sister Venet and he should never be let out again,’ Mr Quinn told the Daily Telegraph.

Arthurell will be up for parole again in March and the state parole has already indicated they will reject his bid for freedom.

Mr Quinn said his sister met her murderer back in 1990 when he was on day release after serving two years of his 11 year sentence.

Ms Mulhall and Arthurell has been constantly sending each other letters and by the time his release was approved, she believed he had ‘changed and was a different person’.

Shocked by how easily the justice system would let out a serial killer, Mr Quinn went to the prison and plead with them to not release Arthurell or something would happen to Ms Mulhall.

His words were not considered and Arthurell was released.

According to police, Arthurell had previously bashed Catherine Page, 80, to death in 1971, and in 1974, did the same to Thomas Thornton.

While in prison for the murder of a teenager, Arthurell confessed to the manslaughter of Mr Thorton, but claimed he was provoked.

In May 1988, Arthurell was released after serving six years of his 12-year sentence and was extradited to Sydney.

Mr Quinn said that it was only weeks after Arthurell was released that his sister planned to move to the country and marry the serial killer.

Despite her family’s pleas to stop talking to Arthurell, by September 1991, Ms Mulhall had purchased a new home and moved in with her soon to be killer.

During their time together, Ms Mulhall would keep in touch with her brother through phone calls.

Arthurell soon broke his parole conditions and a search warrant was put out to find him.

Ms Mulhall was planning to move back home to Sydney to be closer to her family after stating she wasn’t happy with Arthurell’s disappearance.

One day in February 1995, Mr Quinn tried calling his sister and knew something was wrong when she didn’t answer.

Driving up to her home he said it appeared as if there was no sign of her at the property and noticed the doors were left open.

‘As I climbed through the window, I knew from the foul smell, that I was entering a horrendous situation, and that I was looking for a decomposing body,’  Mr Quinn wrote in his book In The Hands Of Evil which details the death of his sister.

‘As the edge of the door passed through my gaze, I could see what I at first thought was a black plastic garbage bag, propped up against the door jam.’

There he found his sister, savagely murdered by Arthurell.

Mr Quinn launched multiple campaigns to find his sister’s murderer and on August 23 1995, Arthurell was arrested in Queensland.

He pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Ms Muhall on October 3 1997 and was sentenced to 24 years’ jail.

His jail sentence expires on May 24 2021.

Mr Quinn is hoping Arthurell would never be released and is putting pressure on the government to declare him a dangerous man.
