Brownlow Medal 2018: Tom Mitchell’s rise to the top of AFL

The best player in the AFL has revealed how his glamorous girlfriend inspired him to drop his junk-food diet and turn his career around.

Hawthorn star Tom Mitchell won the Brownlow Medal on Monday night to cap off a strong year, and became the sixth player from the club to win the award.

During his acceptance speech, Mitchell thanked his girlfriend Hannah Davis for encouraging him to swap crackers and chocolate for healthier options.

Mitchell admitted he would sometimes spend almost $100 a day on fast food.

‘In summary my diet wasn’t too flash before I met Hannah,’ he said.

‘My pre-game routine consisted of a box of barbecue Shapes, a Kit Kat and some Starbursts. I am now on a strict salmon diet. So it’s changed a little bit.

‘I used to eat a lot of Uber Eats. I remember some weekends I’d get breakfast, lunch and dinner so I spent about $80 a day on Uber Eats… much better diet now.

‘She is the reason that I am standing up here. She has helped me enormously and made sacrifices and she is there for the highs and lows and I can’t thank her enough for what she has done for me.’

After receiving the medal, Mitchell credited the people around him for keeping him focused on football.

‘I have great support around me and my girlfriend, Hannah and family and friends who have got me through that. They’ve made it easier to enjoy my footy and enjoy playing with my teammates,’ he said.

Mitchell was drafted by the Sydney Swans under the father-son rule. His father Barry played for the Swans, Collingwood and Carlton over a 12-year career.

Tom was traded to the Hawks in 2016 and signed a lucrative long-term contract.
