Bruno Fernandes has admitted his performance ‘was not enough’ as Manchester United fans turned against their own players  in the humiliating 4-0 loss to Brighton.

Graham Potter ‘s side took the lead after just 15 minutes as Moises Caicedo struck a low long-range effort past David De Gea before Marc Cucurella, Pascal Gross and Leandro Trossard added three more goals for the hosts.

United fans were heard chanting ‘you’re not fit to wear the shirt’ at their own players on the hour mark.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Fernandes said: ‘The result is what it is. It is not good enough. They outplayed us. They always had a solution. Pressed us better and they deserved the result.

‘A little bit of everything [went wrong]. Quality. Mentality. They deserved to win and we deserve to be in the position we are in now. It’s something that we have to look and be embarrassed because that was not good enough from us and we have to do much better.

‘I don’t want to talk about the future, we have still one game this season and we have to win. I talked with the club about the future many times before I signed my contract because I think the future can be good, but obviously many things need to be fixed, as we have seen this season.’

When asked if the chants are justified, he said: ‘I include myself in that. What we did today, what I did today, was not enough to be in a Manchester Utd shirt and I accept it.’

The loss to Graham Potter’s side condemned United to their worst season in the Premier League era as their slim hopes of qualifying for the Champions League next season were ended.

Graeme Souness, who was covering the game for Sky, believes the scoreline could’ve been worse and slammed United’s player for their attitude.

‘Four doesn’t flatter Brighton. The last thing you hear as a player before going out is “make sure we start right”, that sets the tone for the first 15-20 minutes. Man United came out as if they were out for a stroll, this game doesn’t matter.

‘Man United never have an easy game, this is not a big game for Man United, It’s a really big game for Brighton. You were a target when you play for a big football club. If you can’t deal with it, you shouldn’t be at that football. Majority of those players don’t deal with it, that’s why they’ve had such a miserable season.’
