Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford are ‘lazy’ and need to be ditched by Manchester United this summer, according to a former Arsenal star.

Erik ten Hag’s side have come under increased scrutiny since Saturday’s late defeat to Fulham, with the team in sixth, eight points adrift of Aston Villa in fourth.

Now there are calls for widespread changes to personnel at Old Trafford, with some of their biggest names struggling to pull their weight on the pitch.

Former Arsenal winger Perry Groves told talkSPORT he thinks that the Red Devils are ‘rotten’ throughout, and singled out some of their star names for their performances.

Groves said: ‘Manchester United are still rotten. Erik ten Hag is swimming against the tide.

‘If you were a new manager going in the two players I’d get rid of straight away are Bruno Fernanes and Marcus Rashford.

‘They’re everything that is wrong with Manchester United. They’re lazy.’

His criticism of Fernandes goes back to March of last year, when they were heavily defeated by Liverpool on Merseyside.

Groves said: ‘Bruno Fernandes is never a captain in a million years – I said that after they lost 7-0 at Anfield and he was trying to do his socks or his shinpads or whatever.’

However, his anger at Victor Lindelof was related to Fulham’s winning goal at the weekend.

‘The other thing that epitomises it is that Alex Iwobi’s goal was a brilliant, counter-attacking goal’, Groves said, ‘by the time Iwobi scores the goal, Victor Lindelof hasn’t made the halfway line and he’s a defender.’

Rashford has been the focus of some negative off-field headlines this season, and has scored just five goals in his 31 Man United outings this term.

Fernandes has seven goals from midfield, but there are certain results – including the weekend’s game at Old Trafford – which have shown Man United struggling to see out games for positive results, which could always come back to haunt a captain.

Swedish defender Lindelof is out of contract at Man United in the summer of 2025, and the club may decide to cash in on their talent rather than letting his deal elapse.

Manchester United will hope to bounce back from the Fulham defeat in the FA Cup at Nottingham Forest on Wednesday night, before travelling to Manchester City for the derby on Sunday afternoon.
