A blockbuster clash between Richmond and Collingwood has ended early for one star defender, who took a teammate’s knee to the head and was concussed.

The opening quarter at the Melbourne Cricket Ground was the only one that Collingwood star defender Jeremy Howe would play in, after a nasty collision with teammate Darcy Moore.

Howe collided headfirst with Moore’s knee after a bump from Tigers forward Jacob Townsend sent him sprawling.

He was unconscious before he hit the ground and had to be assisted from the field when he came to.

Though a motorised stretcher made its way to the congregation of medical staff on the field, Howe got up and jogged off the field, unsteadily, but under his own strength.

He was diagnosed with a concussion and will not play in the rest of the game.

AFL concussion guidelines dictate that if a player has a concussion, they may not return for the rest of the game, a rule that Carlton broke with playing 20-year-old Cam Polson last month, resulting in a $20,000 fine.

Howe reappeared on the Collingwood bench at the start of the second quarter, but was wearing a team jacket.

The clash between the two sides vying for top of the ladder is set up to be the highest attended match of the year, with 85,000 public tickets selling out in the week leading up.

Collingwood currently sit third on the ladder, but a win could see them overtake the Tigers for first.

Richmond lead going into the final quarter 72 points to 68.
