Bullied boy with different colored eyes and cleft lip adopts cat with same conditions

A bullied Oklahoma boy with two different colored eyes and a cleft lip has found a pet who extraordinarily shares the exact same rare conditions he has.

Madden Humphreys, seven, is bullied at school for his cleft lip and unique two-toned eyes – one blue and one green.

Madden has a condition called heterochromia iridum which makes each eye a different color, a unique quality shared by David Bowie, Mila Kunis and Keifer Sutherland.

Despite the bullying, Madden has found comfort in his new pet cat Moon who his family says he was ‘destined to be best friends with’ as they share not only the cleft lip in common, but the same colored eyes as well.

Madden’s differences made him suffer bullying by his peers, leaving him feeling isolated.

He no longer felt alone when Moon came into his life on Monday as the perfect companion who shares a cleft lip and the same left blue eye and right green eye.

Heterochromia iridum affects less than one per cent of the population, according to Madden’s mother Christina Humphreys.

She says cleft lips affect an even smaller percentage of people.

Speaking to Love What Matters, she revealed her family immediately adopted the cat after seeing the creature in need of a family online.

‘Last week, a friend posted an image of the cat in our cleft moms group. This kitty was taken in by a rescue group in Minnesota. We knew immediately that this kitty was meant to be part of our family,’ she said to Love What Matters.

‘Not only does he have a cleft lip like our seven-year-old son Madden, he also has complete heterochromia iridum, like Madden. They were destined to be best friends. Funny how a pet can make you feel less alone,’ she added.

Her family trekked from their hometown in Oklahoma to Minnesota on Monday to adopt the kitten and bring Madden’s furry companion home.

‘We’re usually not spontaneous people, but we knew that we were meant to love this kitty. Moon, the kitty, and Madden are the perfect companions for each other,’ she said.

Madden has found a special comfort in the pet despite the bullying he faces at school.

‘In a world full of bullies and hateful words, we will choose to chase love. I think it’s safe to say that this kitty is love, and was certainly meant to be part of our journey and Madden’s journey,’ she said

Meet Madden. Madden is an Owasso seven year old who was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate. To date, he has undergone a total of six surgeries, and has many more to go. Madden is usually spunky, outgoing, friendly, kind, and fun! Unfortunately, he had a bully on the school bus this year that started affecting how he felt about himself. When his parents found out, they worked to help change his perception on bullies. Now that he’s back to his normal spunky self, he’s eager for everyone to know that he’s special. He wants to remind the world that being a “poophead” to someone really isn’t cool, as he shows you in his video……. Then, if you feel like it, share his message with others.

The mom says she’s ‘stunned at how this all played out’ and believes that fate willed the two together.

‘Everyone needs a friend, and everyone needs to feel understood. I’m so thankful Madden has Moon. Not only so that both he and the kitty have a relatable and sweet companion, but also, I hope Moon helps Madden realize that being born unique in an incredible thing; that he is magic. These two handsome guys truly are a wonder,’ she said.

She took to Facebook to note how the kitten has had no trouble assimilating into the family.

‘Moon is such a sweet kitty! We are eager for him to feel adjusted, so he’ll come out and play more. He’s super affectionate and lovable!’ she wrote.

Madden went viral several years ago after he posted a moving anti-bullying video in which he details his unique traits and encourages watchers to spread kindness.

Speaking on the video mother Christina says that the merciless taunts broke her son’s spirit.

‘There were a few kids saying really ugly, mean things to him. It really broke his spirit and he had a rough year. The bullying still rears its nastiness once in a while, but the only thing we can do is try to change our perception on bullies, and try to change the way it affects us,’ she said to Love What Matters on the viral video.

With Moon by his side, Madden no longer has to face his hardships alone.

The duo share their adventures together on the Instagram page MaddenandMoon.
