Bun bags at Aldi: Why this bizarre Easter Aldi buy is a surprising hit buy for the supermarket

Why this bizarre Easter Aldi buy is a surprising hit for the supermarket – despite being ‘offensive to look at’

  • Aldi has released a limited edition ‘bun bag’ accessory
  • It is an insulated bum bag to keep hot cross buns warm

The humble bum bag has had a hot cross makeover just in time for Easter – and it’s been a huge success despite its garish appearance.

Dubbed the ‘bun bag’ the fully-insulated fanny pack has room for two hot cross buns so they can be ‘enjoyed on the go’.

It also comes with a velcro divider to keep the hot cross buns inside separated, so they don’t get squashed on the run.

The quirky fashion accessory has been served up by Aldi stores in Australia, but there’s a catch: only 20 shoppers will be able to get their hands on them.

And to do so they are going to have to get creative and explain what makes them the country’s biggest hot cross bun fan.

Fans have until midnight on March 21 to get their entries in – but competition is fierce with more than 800 people entering the contest in the first 24 hours.

‘I love a bun, When I’m on the run, And these bags look fun, I’d love to win one,’ one woman wrote.

‘To My Hump by Black eyed peas:  Whatcha gon do with those buns. Put them in my Aldi trunk. I’m gonna eat those buns. Get love drunk on those buns. My buns, my buns, my buns, buns. Check it out!!!’ wrote another.

‘Hot cross buns cool down too fast. But fear no more… the heat will last. Breakfast can now be in the park. On the train or in the dark. I love my Aldi Bun Bag a lot. And when Easter’s over my toast will stay hot,’ penned a third.

The team at Aldi may have underestimated the popularity of the bags, which come in two different bun-themed designs.

‘We’re pretty sure there are 20 people out there who want one,’ before being inundated with hundreds of entries.

Aldi’s hot cross buns have been voted the best buns across the supermarkets holding the top spot in Canstar Blue’s Most Satisfied Customer awards scoring 5 stars across all categories for taste, freshness, value and variety.

The retailer has chocolate, fruit and fruit-fee varieties available in store for just $3.49.
