Bunnings to hand out thousands of free trees as part of government initiative to make city greener

How you can get a FREE tree from Bunnings as part of a massive giveaway – but you’ll have to be quick

  • Bunnings Warehouse to hand out 26,500 free trees to Greater Sydney residents
  • NSW Government partnered with retailer as part of Greening our City initiative
  • Residents across 33 LGAs can pick up leafy freebie from June until October
  • The initiative aims to plant one million trees by 2022, five million trees by 2030

Bunnings is giving away thousands of free trees to residents across Greater Sydney looking to activate their green thumb this winter.

The NSW Government has partnered with the retailer as part of the Greening our City initiative to give eager gardeners the chance to snag one of 26,500 trees.

Residents across 33 local government areas will have the opportunity to pick up their leafy freebie from a participating Bunnings Warehouse from June to October.

After overwhelming response to the first drop, there are currently no trees available – with the offer set to start again in early July.

Over 10,500 eligible households are invited to take part in the greening initiative, which since 2018 has already invested more than $15million in 66,000 trees.

Each month, a seasonally appropriate species of sapling, small tree or potted Australian native will be available for residents to take home and plant.

Sydneysiders are encouraged to lodge their interest for their free tree on the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment website.

In good news for greenies, in addition to the 26,500 free trees, a further 20,000 plants will be planted by councils across Greater Sydney in the next few months.

The collaborative effort hopes to encourage more wildlife, manage temperatures in upcoming heatwaves, purify the air and beautify the city.

The initiative will aim to plant one million trees by the end of 2022 and five million trees by 2030, as part of the governments ‘Greening our City Premier’s Priority’.

Steve Hartley from the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment previously said the free trees would encourage Sydneysiders to get involved in their gardens.

‘The Premier’s Priority about greening our city is to increase greening and tree planting across Greater Sydney with a million new trees by 2022’, he said.
